The International Institute for Environmental Studies (IIES) is an international environmental science and policy research institution jointly established, supported, and managed by the School of Environment at Nanjing University and Trent University of Canada, along with 20 other top universities and research institutions around the world. The center also invites other international universities/institutions, governments, businesses, and non-governmental organizations with outstanding performance in environmental research to join.
The main function of the center is to assist its members in achieving academic and applied research in various fields such as "environmental chemistry", "environmental health", "green technology", and "environmental policy". Specifically, it regularly holds internationally influential "Global and Regional Environmental Policy Summit", provides business members with a world-leading "technical support platform", conducts joint graduate training with world-renowned universities, invites scholars from various countries to give lectures, organizes international summer courses taught by renowned scholars, hires foreign experts to teach English/bilingual courses and remote video courses for students, etc.
The center has established a Council consisting of 13 voting seats and is managed by the Council. At present, members and intending members include Nanjing University in China, Trent University in Canada, Shanghai Jiaotong University in China, Sun Yat-sen University in China, Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences, State Key Laboratory of Environmental Criteria and Risk Assessment (CRAES), National Taiwan University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in China, Johns Hopkins University in the United States, University of Florida in the United States, University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States, University of Eastern Finland (UEF) in Finland, Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) in Finland, University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom, Keele University in the United Kingdom, ETH Zurich in Switzerland, National University of Singapore, University of Montreal in Canada, Norwegian Institute of Water Research (NIVA), and 20 other universities and research institutions. The addition of these prestigious schools will ensure the long-term operation of the center while also attracting more members to join.
