The Department of Environmental Engineering was founded in 1999 and originally began as the Environmental Engineering Teaching and Research Laboratory created by academician Zhang Quanxing in 1993. The department offers undergraduate and master programs in environmental engineering, and doctoral program and post-doctoral research station in environmental science and engineering. The department gets strong support from State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control & Resource Reuse, National Engineering Research Center for Organic Pollution Control and Resource Reuse, State Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Environmental Science and Engineering, National Virtual Reality Experimental & Educational Center for Socio-economic Environment System, and off-campus companies and enterprises like Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute. It has Jiangsu key teaching & research subject and national incubating key teaching & research subject, and is involved in the national first-class undergraduate construction program and Jiangsu undergraduate program for industry and education integration. It passed China Engineering Education Accreditation in 2007, 2013, and 2020.
The department has 38 full-time faculty members, including 19 professors and 18 associate professors. Among them, there are 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 3 distinguished professors of the Changjiang Scholars Program of Ministry of Education, 2 distinguished young scholars of National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), 3 recipients of the National High-level Talents Program, 5 outstanding young scholars of NSFC, 1 professor of the Changjiang Youth Scholars Program of Ministry of Education, 2 recipients of the Youth Excellence Program, and 2 first-level talents and 2 second-level talents of “333 Project” in Jiangsu Province.
Building on the advantages of the combination of science and liberal arts at School of Environment, the Department of Environmental Engineering has a distinctive character among its brother departments in China. In teaching, while emphasizing the practicality and hands-on ability of the engineering profession, the department is committed to giving full play to the comprehensive advantages of Nanjing University's science and liberal arts disciplines, and cultivating environmental engineering professionals with solid foundation, integration of arts and sciences, broad vision, strong logical thinking and innovative ability, and comprehensive quality. The curriculum covers a wide range of subjects, including Principles of Environmental Engineering, Environmental Engineering Microbiology, Environmental Monitoring, Environmental Statistics, Environmental Chemistry, Water Pollution Control Engineering, Air Pollution Control Engineering, Solid Waste Treatment and Disposal, Physical Pollution Control, Water Supply and Drainage Design, Cleaner Production, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Environmental Protection Industry, etc..
The department has multiple research directions covering the main environmental pollution problems of modern society, and has conducted extensive basic research, technology development, and engineering practice in application of pollution control and resource utilization technologies for water, solid waste, air, etc. The department has achieved fruitful outcomes in the treatment of industrial waste water, watershed pollution control and environmental restoration, environmental functional materials, multi-media pollution control and resource utilization, and environmental health. Since 2000, as the first contributor, the professors of the department have won 7 National Prizes for Technological Invention or for Progress in Science and Technology, 2 Ho Liang Ho Li Innovation Awards, and over 20 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards. They have obtained over 800 authorized national invention patents, and published more than 2000 papers in SCI-index journals including Nature, Nature Geoscience, Nature Communications, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.
The department has frequent international academic exchanges and extensive cooperations with universities and research institutions in the United States, Europe, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other regions. Since 2008, the department has sent outstanding graduate students to famous universities in Europe and the United States for summer exchange programs every year.
Environmental protection and sustainable development are China's basic national policies, and pollution control has become a consensus of the whole society. Environmental engineering has a great potential for development. The good academic atmosphere and strict scientific research training offered by the department have laid a solid foundation for students' future development. Graduates have various employment opportunities with strong adaptability, including teaching, technology development, pollution control, engineering design, and other fields in universities, research institutions, environmental protection departments, companies, and enterprises.
